The German army gave the Marines the nick name “Devil Dogs” due to the Marines ferocity in battle. Teufel Hunden were actually wild dogs from the highlands of Bavaria, who were known for their ferocious and vicious personalities and relentless attacks. This nickname soon grew into an official mascot for the Marine Corps, the English bulldog.
